Cotton poplin and voile
Cotton poplin and voile are the workhorses of summer womenswear. Poplin is crisp and opaque; voile is light, soft and slightly sheer.
- Typical weight
- Voile typically 60-90 GSM; poplin typically 100-140 GSM
- Handle
- Poplin: smooth, crisp, holds shape. Voile: soft, airy, light drape.
Best for
- Shirt dresses and shirts (poplin)
- Blouses, kaftans and summer dresses (voile)
- Embroidered and eyelet styles
- Prints with fine detail
Watch out for
- Voile can be sheer in light colours, so plan linings or opacity tests
- Cotton shrinks; ask for pre-shrunk fabric or allow for it in the pattern
What to specify
- Weight (GSM) and construction (yarn count, picks)
- Finish: soft, crisp, mercerised or garment-washed
- Shrinkage tolerance after washing
- Colour fastness requirements
Cotton poplin and voile, answered.
- Is voile too sheer for a dress?
- In white and pale shades it can be. A slip lining, a double layer or a denser voile solves it; we test opacity on the sample.
